May 2024 – Baguette smells really good

Scratch and Sniff Baguette

Scratch and Sniff Stamp depicting a baguette.

On May 17, 2024, the French postal service issued a special stamp that captures the essence of a beloved French tradition – the baguette. Released the day after the patron saint of bakers, St. Honorius of Amiens, this new “scratch-and-sniff” stamp goes beyond visual appeal. It offers a delicious bakery scent that brings the experience of a French boulangerie right to your fingertips. When you rub the stamp, the scent of fresh baguette is released from tiny microcapsules in the printing ink. The golden crust and the characteristic indentations are also finely depicted on the baguette on the stamp, which is also attractively wrapped in a blue, white and red ribbon, with a heart-shaped bow.

The stamp is sold in panes of 15.

This stamp is a special philatelic monument to the French baguette – which was already recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in November 2022. During our current vacation in France, we can confirm this: The French love their baguette. In the morning, the smell of this freshly baked, special type of bread wafts from every bakery, and people often leave the bakery with at least two freshly baked baguettes. And although Germany can claim to be the country with the greatest variety of breads, the baguette remains a true French icon.
